Netflix Recovery Controls - Video Controls Plus Guide

Netflix recovery controls are keyboard shortcuts that Video Controls Plus switches on after it removes Netflix’s “Your device isn’t part of the Netflix Household” screen, because Netflix keeps its own player controls hidden once that screen is gone. They let you pause, seek, jump through the video and change subtitles or audio without the missing on-screen controls.

How it works

1. Netflix shows the Household screen. Video Controls Plus removes it so playback continues.
2. Recovery controls switch on. Only on that video, and a small notice on the player says so.
3. Use the keys. Space, arrows, Shift/Ctrl + arrows, Ctrl + 0–9, Ctrl + -, V, B, M and F.
4. Change any key. Settings → Keyboard Shortcuts → Netflix Recovery Controls; a key already in use is refused with a link to the shortcut that holds it.

Examples

• You want the middle of a film after the Household screen appeared.. Press Ctrl + 5 to jump to 50%, then Shift + ← to go back one minute.
• You try to set V for play/pause while V already changes subtitles.. The extension tells you V belongs to “Next subtitle track” and links you straight to it.

Frequently asked questions

When do the Netflix recovery controls switch on?

Only after Video Controls Plus removes the “device isn’t part of the Netflix Household” screen on the video you are watching. They switch off when you leave that video.

Can I change the keys?

Yes. Every recovery control — and every other shortcut in the extension — can be given another key in Settings → Keyboard Shortcuts.

Can one key do two things?

No. If a key already belongs to another shortcut, the extension names that shortcut and links you to it so you can change one of them.

Do my keys sync to other devices?

While you are signed in, your key bindings are saved to your account and another device picks them up the next time you open Settings on it.

Does seeking cause a Netflix playback error?

No. Seeking and track changes go through Netflix’s own player, which avoids the error that setting the video position directly can cause.

Tips

• Ctrl + - stops one minute before the end so the credits do not start autoplay.
• Keys are ignored while you type in a search box or other text field.
• Choose “Don’t show again” on the notice if you already know the keys.

Limitations

• The controls only appear after the Household screen was removed; on normal Netflix playback, Netflix’s own controls are used.
• Subtitle and audio switching depends on the tracks Netflix offers for that title.
• Browser-level shortcuts that a page cannot intercept keep their browser behaviour.
