Speed up any video past 2x, and keep the speed

Video Controls Plus sets any HTML5 video from 0.1x to 16x, with keys you can change. Many players stop at 2x, and some hide the speed menu behind a gear icon you have to find again on every video you open. It also remembers the speed of each video you watched, so a lecture you set to 1.6x opens at 1.6x next time.

The extension works on YouTube, Udemy, Vimeo, LinkedIn, Netflix and any other site with a standard video. Speed control needs no account.

Why does the next video start at 1x again?

Most players set the speed for that one video, and the menu you opened does not follow you to the next one.

You open a 60-minute recorded lecture at 1x. The speaker repeats the formula, then reads each slide out loud after you have read it. You open the player's speed menu and pick 1.5x, and the next video in the course starts at 1x again, so you open the menu again on that one and on the one after it.

What changes when the same lecture plays at 1.6x?

It takes 37.5 minutes instead of 60, and you set it in 2 key presses: Ctrl + Alt + 3 jumps to 1.5x and one press of ] adds 0.1x.

If the speaker gets to the part you came for, press [ a few times and hear it slower. = brings your normal speed back. You go faster on the parts you know and slower on the parts you don't, and you never open a menu.

How do you go past 2x?

Press ] to go 0.1x faster, and keep pressing until you reach 4x. Press [ to go 0.1x slower. The 2 bracket keys work on their own, without Ctrl + Alt, so your hand never leaves the keyboard.

Past 4x, type the speed. The widget's Speed tab has a custom input. Settings has Custom Speed (0.1x - 16x) boxes on the General tab as well, and either one takes the video up to 16x.

It does a lot more than the bracket keys, too: 8 preset speeds sit on Ctrl + Alt + 1 to Ctrl + Alt + 8 and you can edit each one to the speed you actually use. Keep 1x on Ctrl + Alt + 2 for the hard parts and put your lecture speed on the key beside it.

Which keys control the speed?

KeyWhat it does
]0.1x faster
[0.1x slower
=Back to your default speed
\Show the current speed
'Apply the Current Dynamic Speed from Settings
Ctrl + Alt + 1 to Ctrl + Alt + 8Presets: 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 2.5x, 3x, 3.5x, 4x
,Step back one frame
.Step forward one frame

The 2 frame keys help when even 0.1x is too fast, for a diagram that is only on screen for a moment. Add a ninth preset in Settings, on the Keyboard Shortcuts tab, to use Ctrl + Alt + 9. Every key in this table can be moved there too.

Does the speed stay when you come back to a video?

Yes. It remembers the speed of each video you watched, and that memory is on by default.

You set 1.6x on a lecture once, close the tab, come back on Thursday, and the lecture opens at 1.6x.

It can also keep one speed for a whole playlist or course. That switch is off by default. Turn it on in Settings on the Advanced tab when every lecture in a Udemy course should play at the speed you picked on the first one. When a video has a saved speed and its course has another, Speed Priority decides which wins:

SettingWhich speed wins
Playlist/Course firstThe speed saved for the playlist or course
Video firstThe speed saved for the video
Global only (ignore saved)Your default speed, and saved speeds are ignored

Your default speed is the Default Playback Speed on the General tab. It's what = returns to and what a new video starts at.

What are the limits?

The step is always 0.1x. Settings has no control for the minimum speed, the maximum speed or the step. The slider does not go past 4x either.

Speed control works with no account. Looping, audio boost and filters do need one, and their keys say so when you press them signed out.

Every speed key and setting is also on the Speed control page in the docs.

Install Video Controls Plus and press ] on the next video you open.
