Lecture notes with timestamps that jump back to the moment

Click Note on the Video Controls Plus widget while a lecture plays and the note is saved with the moment, so a click takes you back to it later. The night before a test, the one worked example you need is somewhere in a 2-hour lecture. Notes live in your account, so they need a connected one.

It works on YouTube, Udemy, Vimeo and any other site with a standard video.

How do you take notes on a lecture video with timestamps?

Open the widget, go to the Tools tab and click Note at the moment you want to keep. Type the note and confirm it. The extension shows "Note saved at" with the time, for example 47:12, and the note keeps the video's title and address beside it.

Here is where that matters. At some point the lecturer works through the one example that will be on the paper. You know it's in there. You don't know where.

So you scrub. You land on a slide that looks right, play 10 seconds, and find out it's the wrong one, and the hour you meant to spend revising goes on finding things instead.

A note with a timestamp fixes the finding part.

Can you add a note without opening the widget?

Yes. Right-click the video and choose Add Note. It saves the same note, at the same moment, from the browser's right-click menu.

Notes are private. They are not posted to the site as comments, and nobody watching the same lecture sees them.

Can you speak a note instead of typing it?

Yes. Speak a note is on the same Tools tab, and it records up to 2 minutes of you talking.

It does a lot more than transcribe: the note is pinned at the playing time and the AI proposes the note from what you said, so your eyes stay on the lecture while you talk. Nothing is saved until you confirm it.

You allow the microphone once, on the extension page Allow the microphone for Speak. A recording that becomes a proposal uses 1 AI run from your plan. Speak needs a connected account too, and a switch in Settings under AI Features turns it off.

How do you get back to the moment later?

Open your notes on the website and click Open at timestamp.

From the widget, Your library on the Tools tab opens Notes on the website. Every note is listed there with its video, its platform and its time. On a YouTube or Vimeo lecture, Open at timestamp opens the video at 47:12 in a new tab.

That's the find step. One click and you're back at the worked example, with your own words about it beside the video.

On other sites the link opens the video without the time, because the extension only adds a time to links on sites whose link format it knows. There, the note's time tells you where to drag.

What do notes need?

They need a connected account. Signed out, clicking Note shows "Connect an account to save notes" and opens the way to connect.

Connecting happens on the website. Press Connect to your account in the extension and a tab opens on the website's connect page, where you sign in with Google if you are not signed in to the website already. The extension and the page show the same short code, and pressing Connect there links this browser, on Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

What the account keeps is what you save: the note and its time, with the video's title and address. It does not keep a record of what you watched unless you turn on Watch History yourself, which is off by default.

The extension itself has no notes list today. The list lives on the website.

How do you take your notes out?

Click Notes MD, Notes TXT or Notes JSON on the widget's Tools tab. Every note in your account downloads in that format.

ButtonWhat you get
Notes MDA Markdown file
Notes TXTA plain text file
Notes JSONA JSON file

The Markdown file is the one for revision. Each note comes with its time and its video, so it sits next to the rest of your course notes as it is. The times still point at the right minute when you open the lecture again, even weeks later when the course has moved on and you no longer remember which week the example was in. The Notes and bookmarks page in the docs covers every note and export button.

What changes about the way you watch?

The next test night, you open the Notes page and click 47:12 instead of scrubbing for the example. It plays. Your own words sit beside it, and the hour goes on revising instead of finding.

Related keys: Ctrl + Alt + 3 sets 1.5x in one press with no account needed, and a 2-hour lecture at 1.5x takes 80 minutes. Slow down with [ on the hard parts and leave a note there. Ctrl + Alt + X copies a link to the current moment on YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch and other sites, and Ctrl + Alt + O adds a bookmark there and saves it to your account when one is connected. Signed out, this browser keeps it.

Install Video Controls Plus and take your first note on the next lecture you open.
