Global Keyboard Shortcuts for Video Control | PiP, Screenshot, More

Video Controls Plus brings global keyboard shortcuts that work system-wide. Toggle Picture-in-Picture, capture screenshots, and show floating controls without clicking anything.

Available Global Shortcuts

These shortcuts work whenever the extension is active on a video page:

Why Global Shortcuts Matter

Speed

Mouse movements take time. Keyboard shortcuts are instant. When you're deep in work and want to:

  • Quickly check a video in PiP
  • Capture a frame for notes
  • Show controls without scrolling

Shortcuts get you there faster.

Consistency

These shortcuts work the same way on every video site:

  • YouTube
  • Netflix
  • Udemy
  • Vimeo
  • LinkedIn
  • Any site with HTML5 video

One muscle memory, everywhere.

Accessibility

Some users prefer or need keyboard-based interaction. Global shortcuts make video controls accessible without requiring mouse precision.

Picture-in-Picture Toggle (Ctrl+Shift+P)

The fastest way to pop videos out of the browser.

What it does:

  • Video not in PiP → Enters Picture-in-Picture mode
  • Video in PiP → Exits back to normal view

Use cases:

  • Watch tutorials while coding
  • Keep a video playing while browsing
  • Reference a video while taking notes in another app

Why Ctrl+Shift+P?

  • P for Picture-in-Picture
  • Doesn't conflict with common browser shortcuts
  • Same modifier pattern as our other shortcuts

Screenshot Capture (Ctrl+Shift+C)

Instant frame capture without touching the mouse.

What it does:

  • Captures the current video frame
  • Saves to your downloads folder
  • Works even during playback

The shortcut captures:

  • Full resolution of the video
  • Current visible frame
  • Optional timestamp watermark (configurable in Options)

Pro tip: For the sharpest screenshot, pause the video first with Space, then Ctrl+Shift+C.

Floating Controls Toggle (Ctrl+Shift+V)

Show or hide the floating control bar anywhere on the page.

What it does:

  • Controls hidden → Shows floating controls
  • Controls visible → Hides floating controls

When to use:

  • Want controls visible while reading comments
  • Need to hide controls for a cleaner view
  • Quick access to speed, volume, and PiP

Customizing Shortcuts

Chrome lets you customize extension shortcuts.

To change shortcuts:

  1. Open Chrome and go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts
  2. Find "Video Controls Plus" in the list
  3. Click the pencil icon next to any shortcut
  4. Press your preferred key combination
  5. Close the tab - changes are saved automatically

Tips for custom shortcuts:

  • Use modifiers (Ctrl, Alt, Shift) to avoid conflicts
  • Keep related shortcuts similar (e.g., all Ctrl+Shift+X)
  • Avoid common browser shortcuts (Ctrl+T, Ctrl+W, etc.)

Troubleshooting

Shortcuts Not Working?

  1. Check the page has a video - Shortcuts only work on pages with HTML5 video
  2. Refresh the page - Extension might need to reinitialize
  3. Check for conflicts - Another extension might use the same shortcut
  4. Verify in chrome://extensions/shortcuts - Ensure shortcuts are set

Conflict with Other Extensions?

Go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts and look for:

  • Red warning indicators
  • Multiple extensions using the same combination
  • Change one to resolve the conflict

Screenshot Shows Error?

Some videos have CORS restrictions that prevent screenshots. This is a browser security feature, not a bug. Try:

  • Videos from the same domain
  • Downloaded/local videos
  • Different video sources

  • Our shortcuts add PiP and screenshot capabilities
  • Ctrl+Shift+V complements YouTube's native controls

Netflix

  • Netflix has limited keyboard support natively
  • Our shortcuts add missing functionality
  • PiP toggle is especially useful here

Udemy

  • Works great with course videos
  • Screenshot captures slides and diagrams
  • PiP helps with follow-along tutorials

Beyond Keyboard Shortcuts

These global shortcuts are just the beginning. Video Controls Plus also offers:

  • Context menu actions - Right-click for more options
  • Floating control bar - Visual controls when scrolling
  • Quick Actions menu - One-click feature toggles
  • Platform-specific features - YouTube, Netflix, LinkedIn tools

Each access method serves a different workflow.

Performance

Global shortcuts are handled at the browser level:

  • Near-instant response time
  • No delay waiting for the page
  • Works even on slow connections
  • Minimal resource usage

The extension listens for keyboard events efficiently without impacting page performance.
